Welcome to the WEC Senegal web site.
The most westerly country in Africa, Senegal has the dry climate of the Sahel and lacks natural resources, but it is relatively wealthy. This is due to the fact that for many years it has been one of the most stable countries in the entire continent. Although there has been violent unrest in the south, which is now starting to calm down after 20 years, the trouble has not been widespread.
The positive attitude of Senegal's ten million people is an asset to the country. Senegalese are usually optimistic, cheerful and easygoing. The word Teranga! (welcome) aptly describes their attitude towards foreigners. Senegal is one of the few nations in the world with a large Muslim majority where missionary work can be done freely, so expatriate workers are under no pressure to gain access through professional skills or engagement in development projects.
The country is open to visitors wanting to come and live here, but there are so few who are willing take up the challenge of sharing their lives with these people. We are few in number but we serve a powerful God, there is always a space for others to join us – could that be you?
